Derry D. Essary, Mayor OFFICE OF THE MAYOR
September 2, 2009
We, as citizens of Bunker Hill Village, are facing a growing problem that is common in south and southwest Texas. We are falling seriously below our average rainfall. In some cities, lawn irrigation is now prohibited. Hopefully, we will not be forced to resort to drastic measures such as irrigation prohibition.
Conservation should now be on the minds of every citizen. Water is a precious commodity that should not be taken for granted.
The City of Bunker Hill Village uses water from two sources. Our primary source of water is ground water pumped from our four water wells. We are mandated by law to supplement our groundwater with additional surface water we purchase from the City of Houston.
During the past four months, our water consumption reached record levels.
We know our citizens have noticed that consumption has been abnormal because a number of you have called to question the dramatic increase in cost. This cost increase is the direct result of an increase in usage and a fee increase by the City of Houston for surface water. In the two month billing cycle ended in August our 1,390 homes, two schools, and four churches used over 105,000,000 gallons of water. The prospect of higher water costs in the future is making it more important than ever to conserve.
I am asking all of our citizens to limit your water usage on a voluntary basis. Specifically, limit your irrigation to no more than three times a week. If the rainfall shortage persist through the month of October, it will be necessary to institute more stringent measures. Hopefully that will not be necessary, however it our responsibility to assure reliable water supply for all of our citizens.
Thank you, in advance, for your cooperation.
